The destruction of Malta / Audrey Duggan
Posted by: kaizenlog in Malta, tags: The destruction of Malta / Audrey DugganMs Duggan has hit the nail squarely on the head. Malta is an ugly mess and getting uglier all the time. Who in his right mind would want to holiday here for anything other than a bit of sun and poor quality beaches? It is because they know they are here for a short time only and can then gladly return to their home country which, in some cases, does not offer the same lovely weather, but at least offers scenery infinitely more beautiful? The whole question here is “How many more times will they come to Malta on holiday, when they discover other touristically emerging countries with equally good weather and with much better scenery to feast their eyes on?”
How many times have we heard this before? Countless times! Who pays attention to it anyway? Nobody! Ms Duggan should have saved herself the trouble of writing. I should be doing likewise, as only very, very few really and truly and deeply care!
All rules, regulations, imagination, etc get swept away when it comes to appeasing developers’ greed for more money and space, and the more restricted the space becomes the greedier the scrabble to build; just in case it completely runs out before they can get to it.
The politicians, and other ruling bodies, responsible for the scandalous destruction of the Maltese Islands during these past few decades have a great deal to answer for and be ashamed of, as they are the ones who have permitted it to happen; have even encouraged it. The current ones, even when faced with the horrendous sight of Malta’s ghastly scenery, still let it happen and in fact go out of their way to rubber stamp it, especially the politicians when it boils down to garnering a few more votes at election time.
But who are the developers? Are they only the tycoons who give generously to the political parties? No! Many ordinary Maltese citizens, sniffing the chance of making a fast buck, pound or euro have turned themselves into developers and built, not pleasingly, but garishly! Why should they be concerned about aesthetic beauty when they can make more money by designing and building the monstrosities we can see in whichever part of the Islands we may be?
And what about the environmental NGO’s? They talk a lot, write a lot, decry a lot; but where are their voices? Are they heeded anyway? While they carry on talking, writing, decrying and telling everyone else how things should be done, all is fine because they are ineffective as they are; unable to change anything. The only time they could have had a hand in changing something for the better was during election time.
I cannot help wondering how they and their members voted in the last election! If they had voted according to their green credentials, would the Green Party not have done better? Or are they so negligibly few in number that they too are unlikely to make any change to the Maltese mindset of pillage and destruction of their homeland?
