Although the no. of response categories may vary

depending on the question an optimal size of 5 to 8 points has been indicated

2. Balanced or Unbalanced Rating scale

(The balanced rating scale has a neutral position)

An unbalanced rating scale is used when the answers are expected to be distributed at one end of the scale

3. Forced-choice vs Nonforced-choice Rating scales

The latter provides a ‘no opinion’ / neutral category viz. respondent indifference; lack of awareness…. and is meaningful in obtaining valid responses rather than chance responses
