Fragmentation: Pros and Cons

No real need to fragment data for data distribution.

An important parameter is the gauging of distribution's unit.

Access is usually partial and not a complete table scan.

A number of views (from different sites) require access to all the table.

Either accepts network traffic.

Or accept the complexities of synchronization updates across a number of replicas.

A transaction could be split over each fragment and computed in parallel.

There are problems with fragmentation:

  • Some end users requirements have no fragmentation pattern.
  • Integrity control over fragments is an expensive process.
