We need to have a methodology that helps us place data and programs across a communications network. We might need to design the network tool.
Our main concern is the placement of data.
The 3 dimensions of the problem are:
- Level of sharing; no sharing vs. data sharing vs. data plus program sharing.
- Behaviour of access patterns. Static vs dynamic. "To what extent are our system's access patterns dynamic?"
- Level of knowledge on access pattern behaviour. 2 extremes: no information present, complete information, partial information.
