IVF: The Ongoing Debate!

IVF: The Ongoing Debate!

16th Mar 2012

IVF poster

In Vitro Fertilisation is a procedure by which egg cells are fertilised by sperm outside the body: in vitro. IVF is a major treatment in infertility when other methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed. This process has been carried out in line with the best medical practices for 20 years in Malta. However, there is currently no legislation regarding IVF, but this does not mean that anything illegal is taking place.

The Malta Medical Students’ Association is organising an IVF campaign which aims at ensuring that the university students and the general public are more informed about this current controversial topic. On the 20th of March MMSA – SCORA (the Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including Aids) will be carrying out outreaches at University Campus with regards to IVF, and this will include the hosting of a debate at noon on University campus, where the panel will include Dr. Josie Muscat, Hon. Owen Bonnici & Dr. P. S. Wismayer.

The aim of this debate is to raise awareness as to what IVF really means, what it consists of, and the current situation in Malta.

Those interested on the matter, are more than welcome to join us on University campus on the 20th March 2012. For more information email us on scora@mmsa.org.mt or visit www.mmsa.org.mt for more information about the association.
