Malta’s 44th Independence anniversary celebrated in Denmark
On the occasion of the 44th anniversary of Malta’s Independence, the Embassy in Copenhagen organised a cultural event for the Maltese community living in Denmark.
The first part of the event consisted of a viewing of a painting of the Valletta Grand Harbour housed at the Danish Sea Officers’ Society. The painting was commissioned by Theodor Frederik Kloss in 1843, which depicts the Danish frigate ‘Thetis’ during a stop over in Valletta on its way to Livorno, to pick up some of the sculptures of the Danish artist Thorvaldsen.
The painting depicts the Grand Harbour in all its 19th century glory with a number of British navy vessels surrounding the ‘Thetis’, as well as scenes from Valletta and the three cities.
Kloss belonged to the Golden Age of Danish art and was a renowned maritime painter. It was an honour for the Maltese living in Denmark to see a painting of their homeland prominently displayed in such a prestigious setting, such as the Danish Sea Officers’ Society. Following the viewing, a reception hosted by Paul Radmilli, Malta’s Chargé d’affaires ad interim, was held at the Embassy’s premises.
