Zminijietna - Voice of the Left congratulated the GWU and its metal section for obtaining a better deal for Shipyards workers following Government’s decision to privatise the company.

It is very positive that leftist organisations such as the Malta Labour Party, Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party, Zminijietna - Voice of the Left, and Moviment Graffitti, and also prominent analysts, supported shipyards workers, thus adding strength to the workers’ cause.

The agreement reached between GWU and the Government, and the participation of a mediator, represent a step forward in industrial democracy, whereby workers’ interests were given due importance in a context of neo-liberal dominance.

Zminijietna - Voice of the Left augurs that this serves as an example where workers’ interests are defended through social policy, improved employment legislation, as well as more representation of trade unions in different work places. Over 40% of Maltese workers are as yet not members of trade unions.
