AD MEETS GWU
A delegation from Alternattiva Demokratika met the leadership of the General Workers Union led by General Secretary Tony Zarb in a meeting today at the GWU headquarters. AD’s delegation was made up of Chairperson Prof. Arnold Cassola and Spokesperson for Social and Economic Development Michael Briguglio.
During the meeting various issues were raised, including the inflation rate, the energy surcharge, the increase in jobs with bad working conditions and the standard of living of pensioners.
AD Chairperson Arnold Cassola explained that the Green Party shall be giving serious consideration to the proposals of the General Workers’ Union for the forthcoming budget and MCESD meetings.
“Green politics and trade-union issues have much in common and can offer viable proposals for Maltese society, merging economic, social and ecological factors”.
Cassola also appealed to the GWU to help set up a Trades Unions’ Council with other unions in order that workers’ rights can be promoted through a collective movement.
Michael Briguglio referred to the Shipyards issue, expressing AD’s solidarity with workers who are feeling a sense of unease as regards their future.
“It is ironic that whilst Government is speaking about the contribution of ageing workers to society, the same government is aiming to dispose of such workers through retirement schemes. AD believes that all Shipyard workers should be re-engaged in productive ways by both the public and private sectors, and retirement schemes should only be seen as a last resort in the absence of a better alternative. Such workers can be involved in productive jobs concerned with the creation of alternative energy sources or for technical work with local councils. The State also has an important role to play in the provision of retraining schemes were necessary”.
AD TILTAQA’ MAL- GWU
Delegazzjoni ta’ l-Alternattiva Demokratika iltaqghat mat-tmexxija tal-General Workers Union immexxija mis-Segretarju Generali Tony Zarb f’laqgha formali dolghodu fil-kwartieri tal-GWU. Id-delegazzjoni ta’ l-AD kienet tikkonsisti fic-chairperson Prof. Arnold Cassola u fil-kelliem ghall-izvilupp socjali u ekonomiku Michael Briguglio.
Fil-laqgha gew diskussi suggetti varji fosthom ir-rata ta’ l-inflazzjoni, l-energija u s-surcharge, iz-zieda ta’ impjiegi b’kundizzjonijiet hziena, u l-livell ta’ l-ghixien tal-pensjonanti.
Ic-chairperson ta’ AD Arnold Cassola spjega li l-AD ser taghti kunsiderazzjoni serja lill-proposti tal-GWU ghall-bagit li gej u ghall-laqghat tal-MCESD.
“Il-politika tal-hodor u ta’ l-unjins ghandhom hafna elementi komuni u jistgh ujoffru proposti viabbli ghas-socjeta’ Maltija, fejn jigu mghaggna flimkien fatturi ekonomici, socjali u ekologici”.
Cassola appealla ukoll lill-GWU sabiex tghin ghat-twaqqif ta’ Kunsill ta’ l-Unjins ma unjins ohrajn sabiex id-drittijiet tal-haddiema jistghu jigu promossi permezz ta’ moviment kollettiv.
Michael Briguglio irreferra ghall-kwistjoni tat-Tarzna, fejn esprima s-solidarjeta’ ta’ AD mal-haddiema li qed ihossu sens ta’ skumdita’ minhabba l-futur taghhom.
“Hija haga ironika li filwaqt li l-Gvern qed jitkellem dwar il-kontribuzzjoni ta’ haddiema anzjani ghas-socjeta, l-istess gvern qieghed jimmira li jiddisponi minn dan it-tip ta’ haddiem permezz ta’ skemi ta’ irtirar. AD temmen li kull haddiem tat-tarzna ghandu jerga’ jigi ingaggat b’mod produttiv mis-settur pubbliku u dak privat, u skemi ta’ irtirar ghandhom jigu kkunsidrati biss bhala l-ahhar pass meta ma tezistix alternattiva ahjar. Dawn il-haddiema jistghu jigu involuti f’xoghol produttiv bhall-holqien ta’ energija alternattiva u xoghol tekniku mal-kunsilli lokali. L-istat ghandu rwol importanti ukoll fil-holqien ta’ skemi ta’ tahrig fejn mehtieg”.
