What are Runtime Errors?
Runtime errors are usually generated when a program is executed on the computer. Generally, these errors are indications of bugs in a program that were missed by programmers during the development of the software or the errors that where anticipated but nothing could be done to resolve them. Other than this, runtime errors may also occur due to the following reasons:
- Program conflicts
- Malware infections
- Malfunctioning hardware
- Damaged Windows registry
For example, runtime error 216 occurs if your computer is infected with Trojan Horse, Backdoor.SubSeven and runtime error 424 occurs when you try to Office Chart on a data access page of Microsoft Office Access 2000 when you have Internet Explorer 6.0 installed on your PC.
What ever may the reason, runtime errors are usually easy to recover from and they rarely cause any irreversible damage to the system.
Let us now have a look at some of the common troubleshooting steps to fix runtime error.
Check your System for Program Conflicts
In case a runtime error occurs during system startup or when you are working in Windows, it is likely that a third-party program or a terminate and stay resident (TSR) is causing program conflicts. If this happens, you may open Task Manager and try to end task all programs that you are not using. You may also use Windows System Configuration Utility or a third-party startup program manager utility to disable all startup programs that you do not want to be loaded when your system starts.
Check for Buggy or Outdated Software
If the runtime errors continue to generate when you try to use a particular software program, game or utility it is possible that this particular program is buggy, outdated, or incompatible with your operating system.
To resolve the error in this case, visit the program manufacturer’s Web site to ensure that you have a compatible version on your PC. Also, if an update is available, download and install to resolve issues due to outdated programs. Often when you install software it installs a few additional programs that you may not be using, but may be causing the errors. Try to uninstall these programs to resolve the error.
Scan and Remove Virus Infections
Malicious programs, such as viruses and Trojans have the capability to modify your system settings and system memory to generate runtime errors on the system. If you have an antimalware program installed on your computer, it is recommended that you update it and run a full system scan on your computer to detect and remove all malicious infections. To ensure that the scan is more effective, you may run it by starting your computer in Safe Mode.
Fix Damaged Registry
Existence of invalid and corrupt entries in the registry may also generate runtime errors. To prevent these problems, you must regularly scan and clean your registry to repair corrupt information and remove all unwanted information from it. You can do this task easily with the help of a reliable registry cleaner tool.
Check and Fix Memory Problems
If none of the above tasks help you resolve the issue, you may need to check your system hardware or memory for problems. You can use a good PC diagnostics tool to check and test your hardware. If you have multiple memory chips on the PC, you can remove all but one chip and then start your computer. If an error occurs, then the chip in the system is faulty, otherwise, you may add one more chip and continue troubleshooting until you identify the faulty chip - this will be the memory chip after adding which the runtime error generates. Replace this chip to resolve the error.
