PR11/07/2008 ALTERNATTIVA DEMOKRATIKA ON FRENCH EU PRESIDENCY PROGRAMME

On Friday 11 July, the French Ambassador to Malta Jean-Marc Rives presented the programme of the French EU Presidency for the period July-December 2008.

In his response, whilst thanking for the exhaustive and wide ranging exposee, the Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika -The Green Party, Arnold Cassola, noted that in his briefing to the European Parliament on Thursday President Sarkozy dismissed social issues as a national and not European question. Prof. Cassola noted that this was quite worrying since in reality all European citizens are concerned about having a Europe that protects them collectively, a Europe that acts in unison against social dumping.

The Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson also pointed out that it was quite possible that during the French Presidency, the EU might have to deal with the question of nuclear proliferation on the part of Iran. Arnold Cassola stated that the sale by France of nuclear technology to various countries in the Maghreb (Libya, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt), in the Middle East (Qatar, United Arab Emirates), not to speak of India, could seriously jeopardise the credibility of the EU position towards Iran, if not addressed in the appropriate way.
