PR 13/06/2008 AD’s reaction to Irish Referendum results

Alternattiva Demokratika respects the will of the Irish people, who have rejected the Lisbon Treaty in a national referendum. It is a big pity, however, that the Charter of Fundamental rights has been rejected. This will be a great loss for all EU Citizens.

Alternattiva Demokratika believes that the right method for the approval of this Treaty should have been a European wide referendum requiring a double majority of states and peoples, as was suggested by the European Greens years ago. Whilst the Lisbon Treaty is now dead, Alternattiva Demokratika augurs that in the next few months a mini Intergovernmental conference (IGC) is convened by the 27 member states in order to approve the necessary institutional changes required for the better functioning of the European Institutions, such as Parliament and the Commission, ahead of the June 2009 European Parliament elections.
