PR 29/05/2008 Malta sandwiched between nuclear plants

Alternattiva Demokratika expresses its serious concern at the fact that Italian Minister Claudio Scajola has announced that the building of nuclear plants in Italy cannot be delayed any longer.

The decision by the Italian Minister is based on fallacious arguments. Apart from the fact that Italy is prone to high seismic activity, and therefore subject to frequent earthquakes, with all the consequent dangers that could result from damage to nuclear plants, as Japan and China have just recently witnessed, the problem regarding the disposal and storage of nuclear waste has not been solved. It seems that with the French decision to build nuclear plants in North Africa and now the Italian decision, Malta will be literally sandwiched between nuclear plants.

“What will Italy do with the thousands of tonnes of dangerous radioactive nuclear waste”, asks Ralph Cassar AD spokesperson on Energy, Industry and Innovation. Apart from safety reasons especially the huge problems with storing and re-processing highly radioactive nuclear fuesl, the nuclear option is also not viable in pure economic terms. Within forty years the uranium supply on this earth will be exhausted once and for all. “Considering that any new nuclear plant in Italy would tke at least 25 years from now to build, how would Italy expect to run its nuclear power stations once the supply of uranium is exhausted”, concluded Ralph Cassar.
