Zminijietna - Voice of the Left appealed to the Government to give more priority to the fight against cancer. Zminijietna said that this requires political decisions both on a national and a European level.

“Zminijietna supports the appeal of the United Left / Nordic Green Left Group in the European Parliament for a task force on cancer bringing together the Commission, Parliament and Council and for more EU funding for cancer detection and prevention”.

“Whilst Malta’s health system is universal and accessible for everyone in certain fields, the same cannot be said as regards others. Breast cancer screening and vaccination against cervical cancer are cases in point”.

“Low income and poverty are key-factors amongst others in ill-health, and this is also true of deaths from cancer. Many cannot afford the hefty fees demanded by the private sector. We therefore call for the introduction of universal public schemes such as free cervical vaccination and free and prompt breast cancer screening”.

“Within the EU, more than two million Europeans suffer from some form of cancer, and roughly one million die, mainly from lung, colon or breast cancer. However, around one-third of cancers in the EU are preventable and another 30% can be successfully treated.

“Zminijietna therefore appeals to the Government and Maltese MEPs to speak up for increased European coordination against cancer, for example, through Structural Funds and the Seventh Research Framework Programme”.
