AD calls for effective responsibility sharing
Following talks with various EU countries regarding irregular immigration, Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party, said that it is full square behind the Maltese government with regards to the attitude of the French and German governments as regards the frontex mission concerning irregular migration.
AD Deputy Chairperson Mr Stephen Cachia said: “The Maltese and Italian authorities are right when they are demanding that responsibility for irregular migrants saved in Libya’s search and rescue area should be taken by the country flagging the ship that has saved the irregular migrants in distress”.
It is very unreasonable that the German and French authorities are demanding that these migrants should be admitted at the closest safe haven, which can only be Lampdusa, Sicily or Malta.
“Responsibility sharing cannot be reduced simply to the concept of sharing the financial burden of patrolling the seas. A humane concept of responsibility sharing means that Germany and France should also take the responsiblity of hosting persons rescued in mid sea, and not transfer this responsibilty only to the Italian and Maltese people”.
