First World Autism Awareness Day
The General Assembly of the United Nations approved a resolution to designate the 2nd April as World Autism Awareness Day, to be observed every year beginning in 2008.
Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder that impairs social interaction and communication, and causes restricted and repetitive behaviour, starting before the child is three years of age.
The main aim of this day is to raise international awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of this brain condition. It is also important to address the misconception society has of this condition and the concerns of parents of children with autism.
The Health Division recognizes this first World Autism Awareness Day and is committed to increase awareness among health care professionals and the general public of this condition which has been described as “one of the mysteries of medicine”.
