I enjoyed enormously what Michael Briguglio had to say. Move on. The reality for smaller parties anywhere is that they get squeezed when there is a chance of a change of power between the bigger ones. Viz the improvement her for the LibDems whilst Blair’s hegemony prevailed; but now as the Tories surge and people are increasingly p*ssed off with Labour the LibDs will really struggle as the agenda becomes the single issue of getting rid of Brown. Do not therefore be dismayed.

I also kept my council a bit during the election. Some of the policies were indeed a bit far fetched like an underground transport system. These are costly enough where the tunnels run through clay, but solid rock!! There would not be enough users in a small population to run it without the need of massive revenue subsidy. Bus lanes work, basement carparking works, car sharing can work, stagger times can work. We should think more of the given resource - water. The vaporettos of Venice work well. A bold plan to cut a canal through the narrow isthmus below Floriana would allow a water bus to do all the three towns, Marsa, Valletta / Floriana, on to Msida, Sliema - - - - - -St Julians. From Marsa the shuttle goes to MIA. Think outside the box.

Alternativa surely means change. Challenge. Proper contraceptive education in schools for all adolescents. What could be greener than that?? Increasing funding for the Police to monitor illegal uncovered loads, real power to the LAs, A forceful safety authority with powers to close building sites with unsafe scaffolding or electrical installations. Maximise the use of farming subsidies, expand the range of crops, in the same latitude the Israelis grow and export avocados, okra is a key ingredient in Indian cooking.

One could go on and on but the debate must be wide and involve as many people as possible.

Think carefully too of Harry’s offer to stand down. His has been an enormous effort and his intellect commands the heights. But, as a sign that the AD wants move on a replacement, if there is anyone suitable should be actively considered. A lady maybe……….. Someone who can deliver the soundbites, much as I don’t like them, that pervade modern political life.

I wish I could send you all a cartoon I have. A heron is attempting to swallow a frog. The frog’s hands are squeezing the bird’s neck and its eyes are bulging. The caption is ‘NEVER, EVER, GIVE UP!!
