High Commissioner Introduces Malta’s New Honorary Consul for Wales

On the 16th of January 2008, the High Commissioner for Malta in the United Kingdom Dr. Michael Refalo travelled to Cardiff to meet representatives of the Welsh Assembly, as well as leading business and tourism personalities to introduce Malta’s new Honorary Consul in Wales.

During a reception at the Pierhead Building in Cardiff kindly sponsored by Ms Jane Hutt AM, Welsh Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills, Dr Refalo introduced Sir Brooke Boothby, Malta’s new Honorary Consul for Wales.

High Commissioner Refalo said that Malta was proud and delighted to have Sir Brooke as Malta’s Honorary Consul for Wales and the audience certainly would understand that apart from thanking Sir Brooke, the main purpose of the evening was to promote Malta’s Honorary Consulate in Wales. This is not the start of a journey together but another step forward to strengthen and develop the excellent initiatives by Welsh and Maltese personalities and institutions. Welsh-Maltese activities have ranged from the educational, arts and tourism sectors to the successful twinning of towns and cities.

The High Commissioner said that winning helps people get to know and understand each other and often leads to initiatives that surpass the boundaries of specific towns and cities. The twinning between Pembroke in Malta and Pembroke Dock in Wales is a case in point.

Such beginnings often lead to initiatives in the field of trade, commerce and investment. The more we work together, the more we strengthen our respective economies. Malta is one of the leading EU states in the IT, financial services, health and maritime sectors and I am convinced Welsh enterprise will find its particular business niche in Malta.

Dr Refalo said he was confident co-operation is possible in areas of Welsh expertise such as rural and environmental affairs, the arts and tourism. As far as tourism is concerned, Sir Brooke Boothby has a very long CV. He is a recognised expert and  there is no doubt his appointment will be a catalyst for parallel increases in the number of Welsh visiting Malta and of Maltese to this beautiful country to see how here in Cardiff you have transformed a drab waterfront into a welcoming, spectacular ensemble of brilliant architecture.

The reception was attended by Sir Norman Lloyd-Edwards, Lord Lieutenant, Minister Jane Hutt and Mr Rhodri Glyn Thomas, Minister for Heritage and Tourism, Professor Sir Adrian Webb and Lady Webb, Sir Geoffrey Inkin OBE, His Grace the Most Revd Peter Smith Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cardiff, the Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Pembroke Dock Council, Mr Elfed Williams businessman, tour operators, travel agents and representatives of the Welsh print and broadcasting media.
