The aim of the twinning project, costing €675,000 (Lm289,777.5), was to provide local experts with technical assistance to improve their waste management skills and implement the solid waste management strategy according to national and international obligations.
Highlighting the Impact and Implementation of the project results, during a press conference at the Austrian Embassy, the Minister for Rural Affairs and the Environment, the Hon. George Pullicino thanked all the Austrian twinning participants for their assistance, particularly for their technical support that complemented the upgrade and commissioning of the thermal treatment plant at the abattoir in Marsa, as well as the necessary support for the licensing process by MEPA of the same.
Minister Pullicino said that over the past years, waste management has been gaining an ever higher priority in the development of our country. He augured this assistance will be strengthened during the implementation phase and assured that the country will continue to invest in having its own waste treatment and management facilities, to treat most of our waste streams in compliance with the related EU Directives and local legislation.
Minister Pullicino emphasised the importance of having Government officials trained in planning for waste management, since it is this planning of the recent past, that is today averting situations as being experienced in the Campana Region in
Minister Pullicino also commended the TWINNING project for focusing on PR and communications since waste management usually attracts a lot of negative publicity and resistance to change. Educating public officers to communicate the projects is one form of roping in stakeholder participation in the planning process for waste-to-energy and construction and demolition waste.
Finally, the Minister augured that common sense prevails and for the country to start understanding the energy potential that lies within the waste we produce. Unless we harness new technologies, as this TWINNING has helped to highlight, there is no way we can benefit from this resource, the Minister concluded.
