The Internet is a large network comprising LAN and WAN technologies. Backbone services provide the link between continents.
Internet connections are made through Internet Service Providers (ISP’s). the web is built around the client-server concept. The protocol used is TCP/IP (Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) and it is this that provides a common language for the various technologies.
All machines that connect via TCP/IP have an IP address. The address must be unique. An example of an ip address is 193.60.49.84
IP Version 6 is a model that makes sure that in the present and future, everyone and the person’s devices will have an unique IP address. IPV6 is backward compatible with IPV4.
IP addresses are difficult to remember so we make use of Domain Name Servers (DNS). This translates a site name into an IP address.
DNS are a hierarchical structure. This provides a structure when searching for a translation of an IP address.
