THE HON. CENSU GALEA, MINISTER FOR COMPETITIVENESS AND COMMUNICATIONS, ADDRESSES A PRESS CONFERENCE LAUNCHING THE MALTA STANDARDS AUTHORITY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

This year the Malta Standards Authority is commemorating its tenth anniversary. In these last ten years, the MSA was responsible for the setting up the necessary quality infrastructure so that Malta could be in a position to meet its obligations as a new EU Member State with respect to Chapter 1 of the Acquis which deals with the free movement of goods. During this period MSA has transposed all EU Directives and adopted all harmonized standards supporting the directives. In fact, the national catalogue of standards has over 20,000 entries, which is one of the highest in the EU. The remit covered by MSA also includes metrology and certification. Last week, MSA became the first ISO 9001 certification body in the world to be accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS), the UK Accreditation Body against the new ISO 17021 standard.

In order to commemorate this event, it was decided to hold an international conference with the theme ‘Corporate Social Responsibilities’ (CSR), on the 26th November 2007.  During a press conference launching this event Minister Censu Galea said that “A growing number of European companies are promoting their corporate social responsibility strategies as a response to various social, environmental and economic pressures. A European Commission Green Paper, promoting a European framework for corporate social responsibility, has triggered a wide debate on the benefits of the concept and ways in which it might be more extensively implemented.

Corporate Social Responsibilities can help Malta to achieve the goals of industrial growth and jobs strategy. It can do this partly because it has the potential to help companies to become more competitive. Over and above that, CSR is also an important factor of our overall objective of sustainable development. CSR matters not just because it makes business sense, but also because it reflects the kind of society in which we wish to live.”

The Authority managed to bring together a number of speakers who are leaders in Corporate Social Responsibility in their country or organization they represent. The mix of speakers comprises both the local and international context from the manufacturing and service industry.
