Happy Friday! Here’s a quick update of the top activity across Change.org this week:

  1. This Week’s Featured Action: Help Stop the Illegal Wildlife Trade in Thailand
The illegal wildlife trade totals billions of dollars a year globally, with the majority of illegal wildlife occurring in one place: Thailand. This was recently highlighted during CNN’s “Planet in Peril” special, which showed how live animals or animal parts of endangered species are sold in open-air markets throughout the region. Watch the video by Anderson Cooper and tell Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism that the illegal wildlife trade is unacceptable and will affect your willingness to travel to the country until it is ended.
  2. This Week’s Featured News: U.S. Guns Behind Cartel Killings in Mexico
A new report shows that nearly 100 percent of drug-related killings in northern Mexico are committed with smuggled U.S. weapons. As many as 2,000 of these weapons enter Mexico each day, and are often bought legally at gun shows in Arizona and other border states where loopholes allow criminals to stock up on assault weapons without background checks.
  3. This Week’s Featured Change: End Sexual Violence
Sexual assault is the nation’s most underreported violent crime. Some national studies indicate that one in six women, and one in 33 men will experience a rape or attempted rape in their lifetime. A new report came out this week shows that the risk of sexual assault for women in the military is twice that amount - or one in three. Join a community committed to ending the culture of sexual violence that plagues our society.
  4. This Week’s Featured Nonprofit: WildAid
WildAid is one of the world’s leading organizations fighting to eliminate the illegal wildlife trade and allow threatened species to recover to safe levels. If you want a world where our invaluable natural riches are not ravaged, please join WildAid’s efforts to ensure that humanity can survive together with wildlife for generations to come.
  5. This Week’s Featured Fundraising Project: Fund Civilian Protection and Peacekeeping in Darfur
The relentless attacks carried out against innocent civilians by the government of Sudan continue to force Darfurians into refugee camps, outside of which armed groups prowl, waiting to assault and rape women and children when they leave the camps to collect firewood. Help support the humanitarian effort in Darfur and advocacy efforts to pressure the US to increase diplomatic pressure by donating to this project from the Genocide Intervention Network.

Enjoy the weekend!
