AD PR 25/10/2007 FRENCH NUCLEAR GOING CHEAP IN NORTH AFRICA
Following Nicholas Sarkozy’s offer of a nuclear reactor to Libya for a desalination plant, the French President has done it again, this time in Morocco.
France is now helping Morocco build a civil nuclear energy industry. “I have the pleasure to announce that we have decided to commit ourselves together to another big project, another big partnership ‘that of civil nuclear energy,” Mr Sarkozy said at an official dinner in Marrakesh late yesterday.
AD Chairperson Dr Harry Vassallo said: “It seems that Nicholas Sarkozy has embarked on a new exercise in unilateralism, with the only scope of privileging the French nuclear industrial interests, rather than giving a boost to alternative energies based on sun and wind energy”.
AD International Secretary Mark Scerri added “These moves of the Sarkozy government are not only damaging to the general interest, but they are also the fruit of double standards on the French Government’s part, that has called for preparation for war against Iran, because of its nuclear interests”.
“It is shameful that the present French government is only thinking of its egoistic interests and ignoring those of the whole of Europe, including Malta”, Mark Scerri concluded.
