Alternattiva Demokratika calls for a stop to intimidation
Alternattiva Demokratika spokesperson on environment and energy Ralph Cassar called for the strict enforcement of hunting laws and for police authorities to clamp down on hunters who resort to intimidation. Alternattiva Demokratika said that it was unacceptable that a number of hunters are resorting to intimidation against environmentalists and all those who visit the countryside.
Ralph Cassar said:”The countryside belongs to all, the presence armed hunters at certain time of the day ruins the enjoyment of families and individuals who choose to relax in the little countryside left in our country.”
Alternattiva Demokratika believes that the Administrative Law Enforcement section cannot possibly be expected to enforce laws regarding everything from VAT to hunting amongst others. The creation of specialised units within the police force needs to be considered. Additionally district police need to be aware that they are also there to enforce laws and need to be equipped appropriately.
Alternattiva Demokratika’s spokesperson concluded:”We applaud the huge conservation efforts of NGO volunteers. The majority of Maltese support you and appreciate your work. It is a real shame that there are some who are cowardly enough to damage the countryside, insult and intimidate people and continue to kill our common natural heritage.”
