Mr Speaker receives the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
The Hon Anton Tabone, Speaker of the House of Representatives, received at his Chambers H.E. Mr Lucien Weiler, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Mr Weiler was accompanied by Mr Claude Frieseisen, the Secretary General at the Chamber of Deputies.
Mr Tabone and Mr Weiler exchanged views on their respective parliamentary systems and gave an overview on the workings of parliament in both countries.
Mr Tabone and Mr Weiler reviewed the progress achieved following the latter’s visit to Luxembourg in November 2005. They augured that the close relationship between the parliamentary institutions in both countries be further enhanced through closer contacts at the parliamentary and administrative levels.
Mr Tabone underlined the fact that the Maltese House of Representatives and the Chamber of Deputies in Luxembourg should forge a working relationship with other parliaments of the same size so that they would view the possibility of making better use of their limited resources in view of an ever increasing EU workload. Mr Tabone and Mr Weiler agreed that technical people from both sides should get together to identify the ways and means of how this can be achieved, firstly at the bilateral level.
Mr Tabone briefed Mr Weiler of Malta’s initiatives in the Mediterranean, particularly that relating to the establishment of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean which will hold its second annual session in Malta next November.
In parallel, a meeting was held between Mr Claude Frieseisen, the Secretary General at the Chamber of Deputies in Luxembourg and Mr Richard Cauchi, Clerk at the Maltese House of Representatives.
