shortly after the war began. Now, for the first time — the first time in
any war zone — the [1]‘bots are carrying guns. The SWORDS robots, armed
with M249 machine guns, “haven’t fired their weapons yet,” an Army
official says. “But that’ll be happening soon.” The machines have
actually been ready for a while, but safety concerns kept them off the
battlefield. Now, the robots have kill switches, so “now we can kill the
unit if it goes crazy,” according to the Army. I feel safer already.”

thefickler sent in this article that opens, “Mac users will continue to
see the Internet as it was intended, thanks to the [0]renewal of a font
licensing agreement between Microsoft and Apple. At TypeCon2007 Microsoft
and Apple announced they have renewed their font licensing agreement,
giving Apple users ongoing use of the latest versions of Microsoft
Windows core fonts. Back in 1996 Microsoft started the “Core fonts for
the Web” initiative. The idea of this initiative was to create a a
standard pack of fonts that would be present on all or most computers,
allowing web pages to be displayed consistently on different computers.
While the project was terminated in 2002, some of the fonts defined as
core fonts for the web have gone on to become known as “web safe fonts,”
and are therefore widely used by Internet developers.”

An anonymous reader writes “Sun Microsystems is set to announce its
[0]eight-core Niagara 2 processor next week. Each core supports eight
threads, so the chip handles 64 simultaneous threads, making it the
centerpiece of Sun’s “Throughput Computing” effort. Along with having
more cores than the [1]quads from Intel and AMD, the Niagara 2 have dual,
on-chip 10G Ethernet ports with cryptographic capability. Sun doesn’t get
much processor press, because the chips are used only in its own
[2]CoolThreads servers, but Niagara 2 will probably be the fastest
processor out there when it’s released, other than perhaps the also
little-known 4-GHz [3]IBM Power 6.”

and approved a legislation asking the Federal Communications Commission
to ‘oversee [0]the development of a super V-chip that could screen
content on everything from cell phones to the Internet.’ Since the
content viewed by children is no longer restricted to TV or radio Sen.
Mark Pryor, D-Ark., the sponsor of the Child Safe Viewing Act, feels that
the new law is necessary. ‘The bill requires the FCC to review, within
one year of enactment, technology that can help parents manage the vast
volume of video and other content on television or the Internet. Under
the 1996 Telecommunications Act, TV makers are required to embed the
V-chip within televisions to allow parents to block content according to
a rating system.’”

revealed some very interesting things about the Al-Qaeda images broadcast
in the mass media. Analysis shows that [0]they’re heavily manipulated, a
discussion meant to illustrate a new technique that can spot forgery in
digital media. ‘Krawetz was … able to determine that the writing on the
banner behind al-Zawahiri’s head was added to the image afterward. In the
second picture above showing the results of the error level analysis, the
light clusters on the image indicate areas of the image that were added
or changed. The subtitles and logos in the upper right and lower left
corners … were all added at the same time, while the banner writing was
added at a different time, likely around the same time that al-Zawahiri
was added, Krawetz says.’”

unsecured access points just got a bit more dangerous. At Black Hat
Robert Graham, CEO of errata security, showed how to [1]capture and clone
session cookies very quickly over connections without encryption. He even
hijacked a shocked attendee’s Gmail account in the middle of his
presentation. ‘While Ou was typing, Graham was running Ferret and
sniffing all the cookies that were being sent from Ou’s laptop and
Google. Graham then clicked on Ou’s IP address and Gmail page, complete
with Ou’s recently sent message on the screen. We photographed both
Graham’s and Ou’s laptop at that time and posted it to the picture
gallery. You’ll see that the contents are exactly the same.’”

of a 1946 World War II Wirraway aircraft. The seller tried to weasel out

at the last minute took him to court. ‘It follows that, in my view, a
binding contract was formed between the plaintiff and the defendant and
that it should be specifically enforced,’ Justice Rein said in his
decision.” I haven’t found anything like this in previous discussions;
have there been similar decisions like this handed down in the US,
Canada, or Europe?

vulnerability in mDNSResponder may have forced Apple to [2]remove support
for certain mDNSResponder capabilities with the recently released
[3]Security Update 2007-007. ‘Seeming to closely follow the information
disclosed by InfoSec Sellout, Apple’s mDNSResponder update addresses a
vulnerability that can be exploited by an attacker on the local network
to gain a denial of service or arbitrary code execution condition. Apple
go on to identify that the vulnerability that they are addressing exists
within the support for UPnP IGD … and that an attacker can exploit the
vulnerability through simply sending a crafted network packet across the
network. With the crafted network packet triggering a buffer overflow, it
passes control of the vulnerable system to the attacker. Rather than
patching the vulnerability and retaining the capability, Apple have
completely disabled support for UPnP IGD (though there is no information
about whether it is only a temporary disablement until vulnerabilities
can be addressed).’”

Winnie Cooper on The Wonder Years and Elsie Snuffin on The West Wing, has
[0]written a math book for teenage girls. ‘Math Doesn’t Suck’ is done in
the style of a teen magazine. It even includes a horoscope, cute doodles
of shoes and jewelry, and testimonials from attractive young career women
that use math at work. It focuses on fractions and pre-algebra and uses
mnemonics like calling a reciprocal a ‘refliprocal’, because you just
take the fraction and flip it upside down. Wired interviewed McKellar
about the new book and her crusade to eliminate the achievement gap
between boys and girls in math courses. McKellar graduated Summa Cum
Laude from UCLA. While studying there, she co-authored a proof and
presented it at a conference. After she and Mayim Bialik — star of
Blossom and a PhD in neuroscience — appeared in a 20/20 episode about
intellectual actresses, several literary agents came knocking on her
door.”

attorney who deals with piracy in the broadcasting industry, certain

sharing media between devices even if those devices are on a home network
and even if the sharing is strictly for personal use. When pressed as to
why broadcasters would want to do this, Burger replied simply ‘because

BlizzCon is in full swing, and celebrants there are already enjoying the
Northrend-themed imagery. For a look at what’s going on, Joystiq has [1]a
liveblog of the opening ceremony up. Games For Windows magazine,
meanwhile, will feature WLK its next cover. The post on the 1up site has
[2]a number of details on the next expansion, including the introduction
of the Death Knight, the first new class since WOW’s launch ‘World of
WarCraft’s first Hero Class is a plate-wearing tank/DPS hybrid that works
a little something like this: When players hit level 80, they’ll be able
to embark on a quest (similar in difficulty to the Warlock’s epic mount
quest, back before the level cap was raised to 70) that unlocks the
ability to create a Death Knight character. The Death Knight starts at a
high level (somewhere around 60 or 70, though Blizzard isn’t certain
yet), so you won’t have to grind your way back up all over again. It’s
intended as an alternative, advanced class for end-game use only.’.”

of the first stem cells from a cloned human embryo to humiliation when
the results were found to be fake. Research at Harvard on Hwang’s cells
has found that [0]they are actually parthenogenic lines derived from eggs
– perhaps a more important and difficult achievement than what he had
been claiming! ‘Researchers said that the distinct “genetic fingerprint”
of the stem cells means they may be the first in the world to be
extracted from embryos produced by the so-called “virgin birth” method,
or parthenogenesis. This happens when eggs are stimulated into becoming
embryos without ever being fertilised by sperm, and has been achieved in
animals. However, before Hwang, no one had managed to produce a human
embryo using parthenogenesis which lived long enough to allow the
extraction of viable stem cells.’”

Chicago, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps [1]lambasted US broadband policy,
saying that the US is ‘playing “Russian roulette with broadband and
Internet and more traditional media.”‘ Copps also took issue with an
[2]op-ed piece (‘Broadband Baloney’) by fellow commissioner Robert
McDowell last week. ‘In his speech, Copps didn’t mention McDowell by
name, but he did claim that broadband in the US is “so poor that every
citizen in the country ought to be outraged.” Back when then OECD said
that we were number four in the world, he said, no one objected to its
methodology. Copps also had fighting words for those who blame the US
broadband problems on our less-dense population; Canada, Norway, and
Sweden are ranked above us, but all are less dense than the US. Besides,
this argument implies that broadband is absolutely super within American
urban areas. Copps noted, though, that his own broadband connection in
Washington, DC was “nothing compared to Seoul.”‘”

application with a graphic user interface and its own icon in the iPhone
home screen. It is not a Web 2.0 app but the real thing. What is it?
Ironically enough, MobileTerminal, ‘a terminal emulator application for
the iPhone. MobileTerminal.app is NOT an SSH client, nor Telnet for that
matter. It can however be used to execute a console ssh-client
application.’ The iPhone dev revolution has just started.”

distance. At least, its orbit does. The planet is located about 300 light
years away, in the constellation Perseus. It circles its giant red star
every 360 days and was discovered by ‘looking for wobble’, the shift in a
star’s movement that hints at orbiting planets. “The discovery could help
astronomers understand what will happen to our sun’s brood of planets
when it exhausts its store of hydrogen fuel and its outer envelope begins
to swell. When that happens in an estimated 5 billion years, our sun will
be so big that it will engulf the inner planets and most likely Earth.
But long before that happens, life on our planet will have perished and
its seas will have boiled away.”

infiltrate the DefCon hackerfest with a producer using a hidden camera.
The show [0]hoped to tape hackers admitting to illegal activities, but
DefCon got wind of the plot and displayed the would-be-mole’s photo
before every presentation. Dateline refused to deny the planned
infiltration. ‘ All journalists covering DefCon sign an agreement upon
registering for the conference that outlines the rules, but the DefCon
organizers say the mole apparently registered as a regular attendee,
thereby bypassing the legal agreement. Dateline NBC is best known for its
controversial To Catch A Predator series, which uses hidden cameras to
tape men who are allegedly seeking to have sex with minors they met
online.’”
