WS Nick writes “Batavia school district in Illinois is recommending that
parents of high school students [0]upgrade their home computers to
Microsoft Office 2007. Why not use one of the free alternatives and
relieve parents of some of the financial burden they face to buy all the
stuff for their children the school requires?” A comment from a reader
points out how easy it is to interoperate with Office 2007 from earlier
versions.

[0]stalebread points to a Reuters story reporting that a federal judge
[1]refused to issue an injunction against eBay’s “Buy It Now” feature.
Quoting: “Judge Jerome B. Friedman of Federal District Court denied a
motion by the Virginia company, MercExchange, for a permanent injunction
to stop eBay from using the feature. The [2]Supreme Court ruled last year
that, although eBay infringed upon MercExchange’s patent for the service,
it was up to the lower court to decide whether eBay had to stop using it.
‘MercExchange has utilized its patents as a sword to extract money rather
than as a shield to protect its right to exclude or its market share,
reputation, good will, or name recognition, as MercExchange appears to
possess none of these,’ he wrote.”

[0]mgv writes to let us know that the lead developer of KisMAC, a passive
wireless network discovery tool for Mac OS X, is [1]discontinuing the
project. Michael Rossberg lives in Germany and that country has recently
passed laws that would make his participation dangerous. He urges
visitors to take a copy of KisMAC and its source as long as the site is
up, so that development might be continued outside the US or EU. From the
website: “There has not been a lot of time for KisMAC lately. However the
motivation for this drastic step [lies] somewhere different. German laws
change and are being adapted for ‘better’ protection against something
politicians obviously do not understand. It will become illegal to
develop, use or even posses KisMAC in this banana republic [i.e.,
Germany].”

[1]far-reaching powers to control satire and ridicule of MPs in
Parliament, attracting a storm of media and academic criticism. The new
standing orders, voted in last month, concern the use of images of
Parliamentary debates, and make it a contempt of Parliament for
broadcasters or anyone else to use footage of the chamber for ’satire,

it is the standard “[2]Hello, world.” application, but it’s native to the

iPhone, installing the iPhone “[3]Toolchain”, writing an application,
compiling, translating, and finally installing the application to the
iPhone. With the pace of development at present, expect to see commercial

concerns that this is just another Linux clone — muddying up the waters

attempt to make an OS that appeals to a broader audience. From the
article, “Project Indiana will include a revamped package management
system, which should prove popular with developers unaccustomed to
Solaris. The OS has some clunky, archaic aspects, and Murdock thinks the

i_like_spam writes “The NYTimes is running a story about [0]a new trend
in tuition charges at public universities throughout the country.
Differential pricing schemes are being implemented, whereby majors in
engineering and business pay higher tuition rates than majors in arts and
humanities. Last year, for instance, engineering majors at the University
of Nebraska starting paying an extra $40 per credit hour. One argument in
support of differential pricing is that professors in engineering and
business are more expensive than in other fields. Officials at schools
that are implementing differential pricing are aware of some of the
downsides. A dean at Iowa State said he ‘thought society was no longer
looking at higher education as a common good but rather as a way for
individuals to increase their earning power.’ And a University of Kansas
provost said, ‘Where we have gone astray culturally is that we have
focused almost exclusively on starting salary as an indicator of… the
value of the particular major.’”

bushwhacker2000 alerts us to the dilemma of Thomas Dullien, a prominent

security conference. Dullien was [0]denied entry into the US on his way
to this year’s conference. Dullien, a German reverse-engineering expert
known in hacker circles as “Halvar Flake,” said he was blocked from
entering the US on the technicality that he had (years ago) signed a
contract with Black Hat as an individual, not as his company. Customs
agents said he would need an H1-B visa to perform the contracted two days
of training at Black Hat, and put him on the next plane back to Germany.
