MALTA ARTS FESTIVAL – SUMMER 2007

A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Shakespeare

The Malta Arts Festival – Summer 2007 is in its second year of packed daily events from Wednesday 25th July till Sunday 19th August 2007. Organised by the Malta Council for Culture and Arts the festival offers a broad spectrum of artistic creations that will cater for everyone’s tastes. Aimed to be at the heart of the Maltese people through well-priced tickets and careful programming, the Malta Arts Festival – Summer 2007 is accessible to all.

The festival kicks off with MADC’s production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, one of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays. The romantic comedy portrays the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of amateur actors in a moonlit forest, and their interactions with the fairies who inhabit it.  It is a masterpiece of construction and is often considered to be one of Shakespeare’s most perfect plays.

Veteran director Chris Gatt will give a totally original interpretation to ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, using the ruins of the former opera house to create this magical story in a scrapyard setting.

It is the first time in 70 years that the MADC has swapped the leafy settings of San Anton Gardens for its annual Shakespeare production. Established since 1910, the MADC is Malta’s oldest drama club, producing around six productions every season, including the popular Christmas pantomime at the Manoel Theatre. www.madc.biz This event is sponsored by the Vodafone Foundation.
