Greetings!
In March I held my first ever Indiepop night and it was a success through and through. People had fun and were dancing straight through to the early hours of the morning.
Now on the 21st July it’s back and stronger then ever!
before I actually go into detail about this let me explain what exactly indiepop is.
In 1986 NME released a cassette tape called c86. On it there were 20 odd bands. Most of these guys played an uber melodic type of rock, with super catchy choruses and lyrics about every day life. Some other bands played their music at 100mph with buzzsaw guitars. again they sang about love and life in general. Part byrds Part Ramones Part Velvet Underground
indie pop is born.
If you really want to be technical though The very first indiepop song was The velvet Underground’s I’m Sticking with you and the very first indie pop band Beat Happening, but it was with C86 that things exploded.
throughout the years though the genre hasn’t changed much, maybe a bit cleaner soundwise and some bands have a more symphonic texture but the roots are there. Huge choruses and lyrics that we can relate to.
ANYWAY
on the 21st you can say i’ll be celebrating this type of music. With indie pop bands old and new, with a teensy touch of soul and fifties music chucked in for good measure.
the night itself will consist of my like minded mate G ( who also designed this great flyer you see below) opening up with a very indie set to whet your apetite and then i come in a bit later making you all clap your hands and saying YEAH!
ENTRANCE - IMPORTANT
Right in order to get in free - yes FREE! all you have to do is write TWEE AS F**K ( or fudge if you’re not inclined to writing swears) on a t-shirt.
if you don’t then you’ll have to pay Lm 1.00
btw twee as f**k was a slogan coined up by scottish indie pop pioneer Stephen Pastel - of … The Pastels. He used to wear it on a t-shirt when he’d attend his own curated indie pop nights too!
so hope to see you guys at Velo Lounge Lo Squero 21st July @ 22:00!
