Since inception in 1986, Howard Park’s reputation of crafting balanced and elegant wines with uncompromising commitment and much pride and passion, has become internationally recognised:

  • Commitment to Western Australia’s best grape growing regions of Margaret River and the Great Southern, hence winery locations in these two areas and the introduction of regional wines.

  • Commitment to sourcing the very best fruit from specific vineyards and in many cases specific blocks on these vineyards in Western Australia’s Margaret River and cool climate Great Southern regions.

  • Commitment to traditional winemaking skills, new French oak and careful blending procedures to ensure perfect harmony is achieved.

During vintage, Chief Winemaker Michael Kerrigan drives over 26,000 kilometres testing, selecting and carefully monitoring the fruit planned for the Howard Park range of wines. His trusty Holden Commodore wagon is constantly covered in dirt and mud from travelling the South West’s ‘dirt track’ roads.

As a result, The Howard Park Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot and regional range or reds are only ever produced in very small quantities, but are noted for their rare balance of elegance and power.

They also have a proven history of ageing with increased complexity and interest ensuring these wines are always in demand.

Howard Park Leston Shiraz

Named after Jeff Burch’s father, the Leston Shiraz is 100% Maragret River Shiraz matured in predominantly new (65%) and used French oak for approximately 18 months. Although a relatively new wine label, it has already won considerable attention for achieving opulence with strong regional definition.

Composition: 2004 Howard Park Leston Shiraz.

Region: Leston Vineyard River.

Technical notes: this is the sixth Howard Park Leston Shiraz released from Block 4 on the Leston Vineyard in Willyabrup, Margaret River. The vines are given extraordinary attention in the vineyard designed to maximize fruit exposure to the sunlight and keep yields low to achieve concentration in the grapes. The grapes are harvested according to flavour with little regard to analytical data. Fermentation occurs in open topped stainless steel tanks with highly aerative pumpovers that are integral in tannin development. At completion of fermentation, the Shiraz is pressed off into French oak barriques of which about 60% are new, the balance being 1 year old. The wine was matured in the barrel for approximately 18 months. There was minimal fining and filtration performed.

Tasting notes: The Leston Shiraz has a medium density blood red appearance with high clarity. The aroma shows predominantly primary fruits with rich and ripe cherry and plums. An attractive lifted violet perfume is the distinctive vineyard character that runs through each vintage of this wine. The 2004 Leston Shiraz has gone up a level in terms of its palate concentration and depth, displaying a very rich and full fleshy fruity palate profile with the soft fruit sweet mid palate being the primary wine attribute. The wine is very youthful requiring bottle age for the tannins to develop to the next stage of complexity.
