For Sicilian wine lovers, Cusumano is not a new name in Malta. Bicanter Distributors have been importing the full range of Cusumano wines, olive oil and grappa for over three years.
The winery, Cusumano, is now gaining more attention outside Sicily. In 2001, brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano took over management from their father Francesco, and began an aggressive programme of purchasing vineyard land and rebuilding the winery. With the Tuscan winemaker Mario Ronco as consultant, Cusumano now produces some 1 million bottles annually. It is widely available in Europe, and is beginning to turn up at retail stores in the U.S., Australia and elsewhere around the world.
The wines come from 400 hectares of vineyards located in several areas of Sicily: Partinicio, Monreale, Alcamo, Contessa Entellina, Salemi Marzara del Vallo, Riesi, Butera and Pachino. Through their deep understanding of the Sicilian soil, Cusumano choose the characteristics best suited for each wine be it soil, the altitude and the big microclimate.
The Gambero Rosso Italian Wine Guide 2003 called Cusumano “the real gems of the new Sicilian wine scene.” Cusumano were also nominated for Best Italian Producer of the year at the prestigious international wine and spirits competition.
Cusumano wines have won the top awards that can be given to Italian wines. They have a number of wines that have been given the Gambero Rosso ‘three glasses’ and also the Nero d’Avola which was awarded the best value wine in Italy under 10 Euros.
Their top level wine, the ‘Noa’, is a blend of Nero d’Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. However, the Sicilian character is also expressed in the Sagana, a pure Nero d’Avola with excellent qualities. The rest of the wines are well-made including the Benuara, named after a Sicilian wildflower. This is a blend of Nero d’Avola and Syrah and was recently awarded the ‘three glasses’ by Gambero Rosso. At its price, this is clearly a very good buy for any wine enthusiast.
The Cusumano wine producing business took shape forty years ago, thanks to Francesco Cusumano, the father who sensed the evolution and innovations to come in this sector and made changes in the vineyard. Apart from the Sicilian grapes, he also planted some international varieties of vine, such as the famous Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
The children, Alberto and Diego, entered the company in 1995. Their common aim was to create a new company which could produce wines that respected their territory of provenance, wines from Sicily.
