A greener Hilton Malta
Each member of the Hilton Malta team were awarded an eco-friendly mountain bike by their regional manager, Wolfgang M. Neumann, after they cut energy consumption by over 15 per cent to win the Hilton We Care! Campaign.
They also reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 5,800 tonnes, which is the equivalent of taking 1,200 cars off the road. More than 16,000 Hilton staff members in over 79 Hotels worldwide took part in the competition.
The Maltese group beat the 11 regional Hilton teams to scoop the energy champion’s crown. Overall the programme saw 4,400 team members trained in online eco-learning and hundreds of ‘green’ initiatives employed.
The result was a 6.5 per cent reduction in energy consumption across the estate. The aim of this campaign was to focus on four key environmental issues: energy efficiency, waste reduction, water efficiency and pollution minimisation, and to identify environmental improvements and implement change.
The target is to cut energy by a further five per cent and water by ten per cent. Mr. Neumann has stressed that this is just the beginning of one of the biggest brands in the world doing something to help the environment.
Hilton’s Malta’s major environmental activities also included converting water boilers from diesel to gas fired, replacing almost 3,000 halogen lamps with compact energy saving lamps, installing a new reverse osmosis plant, planting 200 trees and separating 100 tonnes of waste.
