Infertility and childlessness
What can family members do to help?
Couples struggling with childlessness need support from family members and friends. These must, however, be aware that there is a fine line between being helpful and being intrusive.
Here are some tips:
-
Show understanding and acceptance. An infertile couple might need to come to terms with a pregnancy, or birth in the family. They must not be rushed into accepting the new arrival.
-
Listen without giving advice, be be sympathetic as silence could be interpreted as lack of interest.
-
Let the couple know you are there for them since many feel alone and isolated.
-
Do not pressure a childless couple. This is a private decision and rests only with the couple.
-
Do not tell a childless couple that it is better to remain childless than to have a disabled child.
-
Do not joke about infertility; let them be the ones to joke about it.
-
Learn about infertility, so you can be an informed listener.
-
Do not tell a childless couple that it was not God’s will. God’s will is never such that it causes anguish.
