Monitoring Competitors

The purpose of analysing competitors is to try and assess what they will do. This will enable the organisation to respond accordingly. Competitive advantage is about relative competitive position. Competitors are used as benchmarks.

The importance of information technology means that organisations have to consider carefully how they should monitor competitors and what they are aiming to achieve.

Monitoring of competitors is more important in concentrated markets than in fragmented markets. In fragmented industries high profits are unlikely to be made for very long because of limited entry barriers, and the main hope businesses have of making large profits for even a short period of time is to differentiate themselves from the competition.
