E-mail Privacy
Organizations have policies that state that employees e-mail is not private and will be read at any time by the employer. To avoid this, set up a separate personal e-mail account for personal messages.
You can get a free personal e-mail account which is accessible from the internet. However, the profiles you complete when applying for a free e-mail address are accessible to others.
One should always assume that any information you provide can be made public if requested by the government and other authorities. E-mail addresses are also vulnerable to spammers.
One can find out that if your existing e-mail address is spammable by going to a search-engine and entering one’s e-mail address. If your e-mail address appears on a webpage, contact the webmaster to remove your e-mail from his/her site.
If it is not possible open a new e-mail address. E-mail accounts are vulnerable to hackers who may acquire your password. One should change password occasionally and never reveal the password to anyone.
When creating a password use a combination of letters and numbers. This will make it harder for someone to guess your password. One should also log-off from your account after use.
Other people may use the computer later and send e-mails from your account. This can cause damage to your reputation as a minimum.
