The longer an organization operates, the more formalized it is likely to become. With age comes standardized systems, procedures and regulations. Therefore, older companies take on characteristics of mechanistic structures.
Organizations, like people, evolve through stages of a life cycle. Within this organizational life cycle, businesses follow observable and predictable patterns.
There are four stages: birth, youth, midlife, and maturity. Each stage involves changes in the overall structure.
