Advantages of the Network Structure

The network structure provides flexibility because a company purchases only the specific services needed. Administrative overhead remains low because large teams of staff specialists and other administrative personnel are not needed.

E-mail is a common method used by a network to communicate.

Email

Electronic mail (e-mail) enables a computer used to send a message automatically to another computer user anywhere in the world. E-mail is the most popular activity on the internet.

It allows people to send messages and files around the world in seconds. Hundreds of millions of people are interacting at the speed of light. In addition to one-on-one communication, other internet resources can be tapped through e-mail.

These resources include retrieving publications; searching for and retrieving files; and participating in discussion groups. Some organizations have e-mail systems that are not part of the internet.

Most computer networks, even if not directly connected to the internet, can send and retrieve internet e-mail through a gateway or a computer that passes information between networks.

This means you don’t have to have a direct internet connection to use internet e-mail, but you must have a computerized mailbox that can be reached by other computers on the internet.

To use e-mail, you need an electronic mailbox from where your mail can be sent. Also, you must know the exact electronic mailing address of the person to whom you are sending the message.

If you aren’t precise, your e-mail will bounce back to you with an error.

Disadvantages of the Network Structure

The major shortcoming of this type of structure is lack of control. The management core must rely on contractors. This limitation can be minimized if management is willing and able to work closely with suppliers.

The reliability of supply, however, is less predictable than it would be if the company owned the means of supply. If a supplier faces problems, the central hub of the network is endangered.

If an organization relies on contract work, central managers may lack technical expertise to resolve problems effectively.
