A Post Office branch like any company layout should be organized in a way that increases productivity and efficiency. Post Offices main services are sorting of letters and of bulk packages.
Since the “activities” are performed in a routine way, a process-oriented layout ideally should be used to be more productive. The objective of a process layout is to minimize handling and movement. This means ideally the branch should follow a linear line.
In this way as sorting is done, from the arrival of the van to the departure of postman with the motorcycle, the sub-processes of sorting are close to each other.
In the current system in Gozo, time is wasted when the letters are pulled by a pulley. Ideally when the branch was chosen, the work process should have on the ground floor.
A garage should be built with the vans parking on the left side of the garage and motorcycles on the right. In the existing facility an elevator should be installed to replace the pulley system. This ensures greater safety for workers and a lower risk of losing letters.
The letters are sorted in a room. As mentioned above, this should follow a linear process. There will be another room where the staff of the branch will be kept. They will be able to interact with the front line which interacts with the customers who come to pick up their parcels.
The diagram shows how the layout of the premises should have been built.
