Distributed Databases June 2005 No 1

1a) Write clear definitions for the following: database, distributed database, tightly coupled distributed database, and distributed DBMS

Database: a database is a collection of records stored in a computer in a systematic way, such that a computer program can consult it to answer questions.

Distributed database: A distributed database is defined to be a collection of multiple, logically interrelated databases distributed over a computer network that cooperate in performing their assigned tasks.

Tightly coupled distributed database: a database accessed by multiprocessors. A multiprocessor system is generally considered to be a system where two or more processors share some form of memory, either primary memory, in which case the multiprocessor is called shared memory, i.e. tightly coupled

Distributed DBMS: Software system that permits the management of the DDBS and makes the distribution transparent to the users.

1b) Explain and draw the four level distributed database reference architecture for a tightly coupled distributed database

DDBMS architecture model

1c) You have been entrusted to indicated selection criteria for the adoption of data architecture infrastructure. The tenable options are centralised client/server DBMS, tightly coupled distributed DBMS, and a loosely couple setup. Your selection criteria need not be all technical; in fact it is much better to mix (e.g. with business requirements). Do give the indicative or relative strength of each criterion.

Centralised client/server DBMS:
